Participants from 16 countries: 10th International FRANZ LISZT Piano Competition Weimar-Bayreuth in October and November 2021

The jury nominated a total of 37 pianists after a pre-selection via video for the 10th International FRANZ LISZT Piano Competition Weimar-Bayreuth, which the Franz Liszt University of Music Weimar and the City of Bayreuth are jointly organizing from October 27 to November 7, 2021. The participants travel from 16 different countries around the globe, including China, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Mexico, Canada, the USA and various European countries.

Budapest, Utrecht – and Weimar: The Liszt competition organized in cooperation with the city of Bayreuth has long been one of the three most important international competitions that place Franz Liszt’s work at the center of the performance comparison. For the tenth time, the Franz Liszt University of Music Weimar and the city of Bayreuth are inviting you to this event. While the first round will be held in Bayreuth, the competition for the other rounds and the final will move to Weimar.

Liszt for four hands: Concert series as part of the 10th International FRANZ LISZT Piano Competition Weimar-Bayreuth

Franz Liszt himself arranged a number of his symphonic poems with virtuosity for piano four hands. The renowned piano duo Edit Klukon and Dezsö Ránki will now present a selection from these arrangements in the opening concert (October 27, 2021) of the 10th International FRANZ LISZT Piano Competition Weimar-Bayreuth. This concert, jointly organized by the FRANZ LISZT Weimar University of Music and the City of Bayreuth, will take place on Wednesday, October 27th at 8 p.m. in the magnificent Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth.

The Hungarian piano duo Edit Klukon and Dezsö Ránki have performed a large number of works for two pianos by Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Debussy, Ravel, Grieg, Bartók and Satie in their more than 35-year career. Concert tours have taken it all over Europe, to the USA, to Japan and to South America. Tickets for 21 to 70 euros are available at the Bayreuth box office (Theaterkasse).

The series of concerts accompanying the competition will be continued with two concerts as part of the “European Liszt Night Tour”. Three winners of the international Liszt competitions in Weimar-Bayreuth, Utrecht and Budapest can be seen on Sunday, October 31st at 7 p.m. in the Richard Wagner Hall of the Bayreuth Municipal Music School. The Russian Dina Ivanova, who won the 3rd prize at the 11th International Franz Liszt Competition in Utrecht 2017, the Georgian Tamta Magradze, audience prize winner of the 12th International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Utrecht 2020, and the Russian Anton Yashkin, who competed in 2018 won 1st prize at the 9th International FRANZ LISZT Piano Competition Weimar-Bayreuth. Tickets for 10 euros, reduced 5 euros, are available from the Bayreuth box office.

On Monday, November 1st, 11 a.m., Nike Wagner speaks about her great-great-grandfather Franz Liszt in the Steingraeber Chamber Music Hall. Tickets for 10 euros are available in advance at the Steingraeber Haus in Bayreuth. On this day, the “European Liszt Night Tour” will also have its second appearance: The award-winning pianists will then give a concert at 7.30 p.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus of the Weimar Academy of Music. Tickets for 15 euros, reduced 10 euros, for the concert in Weimar are available at the Weimar Tourist Information and at the box office.

On Saturday, November 6th, 11 am, scholarship recipients will give a concert inside the “Piano Podium Karlsruhe” a piano matinée with Liszt works in the Steingraeber Chamber Music Hall. Tickets for 18 euros, students 5 euros, are available in advance at the piano store in Bayreuth.

The Liszt Piano Competition invites you to the big final concert on Saturday, November 6th, at 7.30 p.m. in the Weimarhalle. There, the finalists of the competition play for the prizes together with the Staatskapelle Weimar under the direction of Dominik Beykirch, piano concerts and, if necessary, the “Dance of Death” by Franz Liszt. Tickets for 19 euros and 15 euros for a reduced price are available from the Weimar Tourist Information Office and at the box office.

This will be followed by the winners’ concert on Sunday, November 7th, at 5 pm in the Europa Hall of “Das Zentrum” in Bayreuth. Selected works from the competition program are presented here. The Bayreuth box office (Theaterkasse) sells tickets for between 21 and 26 euros.

International jury

The international jury chaired by Weimar piano professor Gerlinde Otto then decides who is allowed to perform Liszt’s piano concertos or the “Dance of Death” in the finale with the Staatskapelle Weimar. In addition to chairman Gerlinde Otto (Germany), the jury also includes Boris Bloch (USA / Germany), Dana Borsan (Romania), Wolfgang Döberlein (Germany), Carsten Dürer (Germany), Gábor Farkas (Hungary), Pasquale Iannone (Italy), Eugene Skovorodnikov (Canada) and Zhu Xiao-Mei (China / France).

The jury is also responsible for deciding whether to award the prizes with a total value of 25,000 euros to the greatest talents. The first prize of the competition, endowed with 12,000 euros, is donated by the New Liszt Foundation. A 2nd prize (8,000 euros) and a 3rd prize (5,000 euros) will also be awarded, plus special prizes and follow-up concerts.

The required competition repertoire places a clear focus on the piano works of Franz Liszt in all evaluation rounds. Exceptions are works by Bach and Saint-Saëns in the first round and Haydn and Beethoven sonatas and another work by Saint-Saëns in the second round. From Liszt’s oeuvre, song transcriptions, études and other works of your choice will be heard. Liszt’s majestic B minor sonata is the only item on the program in the semifinals;

The competition, launched 27 years ago by the Weimar University of Music, is largely financed by the Free State of Thuringia and the City of Bayreuth. The New Liszt Foundation Weimar also provides support. Prof. Gerlinde Otto is the artistic director.
